Safe Catch – Tuna Tested for Mercury

Tuna is an excellent source of Omega 3s, B vitamins, niacin, potassium, selenium, thiamin, and all 9 essential amino acids. It has long been considered a superfood that lowers your risk for stroke, cardiovascular disease, cancer, high blood pressure, eye disease and even mental health problems. Sadly, in recent years this super-fish has come under fire as the FDA and EPA has recommended eating less tuna due to rising mercury levels being found in predator fish. These rising levels are broadly analyzed for each species of fish, so the FDA looks at mercury levels in tuna populations as a whole. However, the actual levels of mercury in any individual fish can vary greatly, even in fish that come from the same area and swam in the same school. One tuna may have almost no trace of mercury while the next could have dangerous levels. In short, when you purchase tuna you never know what you’re getting.

Safe Catch is the first brand of canned tuna to test every single individual fish for mercury content. They’re the only ones who do this because Safe Catch has developed a proprietary technology that enables them to quickly and accurately evaluate each tuna before they buy it. If a fish exceeds their strict standards then it won’t qualify as a Safe Catch tuna, however the fish is still used by other brands. They also keep a watchful eye on levels of radiation, Cesium-134, Cesium-137, and Iodine–131, Strontium-90, Ruthenium-103 and Ruthenium-106, along with 13 other isotopes that can be found in tuna.

Mercury content limits for Safe Catch Elite Wild Tuna are 10x more stringent than the FDA requires. They use skipjack tuna, which is one of the most plentiful types, and the mercury level in each fish must not exceed 0.1 parts per million (wild tuna can be well over 2.0 parts per million). Safe Catch also offers Wild Albacore Tuna that has 3x less mercury than FDA requirements. While the Elite Wild Tuna is a more pure fish, it is actually less expensive than the Wild Albacore because there is a higher demand in the market for albacore tuna, the traditional type used in most cans that many people grew up eating.

Safe Catch buys their wild tuna from managed and sustainable tuna stocks, strictly from responsible fishermen that use catching methods with the least possible environmental impact. Their Wild Albacore is pole and line caught, which means that each individual fish is caught with one hook and one line. This method eliminates the needless trapping of dolphins and other marine life in fishing nets. Safe Catch requires that every captain sign a statement guaranteeing that no dolphins were killed or injured in the fishing process.

Safe Catch tuna is very minimally processed. Each fish is hand cut into solid, raw tuna steaks and hand packed into cans. After the cans are sealed, the fish is slow cooked which preserves all the nutrients and flavor. Most canned tuna is heavily processed, which negatively affects the flavor and causes the loss of most of the valuable Omega 3s. Conventional brands pre-cook the fish, typically on a rack, and as the fish cooks many nutrients and natural oils drain away. To compensate for flavor and moisture loss other brands add fillers, preservatives, oils, water or broth when the fish is canned. If you’ve ever opened a can of tuna and poured out the layer of oil on top, that is the stuff that was added. Safe Catch uses absolutely no added fillers of any kind. The cans simply contain pure tuna. The small amount of oil found in a Safe Catch can is the naturally occurring fish oil that is rich in vitamins, minerals, and Omega 3s.

Safe Catch was created by Bryan Boches and Sean Wittenberg. The two childhood friends grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area with a strong appreciation and love for nature. Their mission is to deliver high quality, pure foods at an affordable price and protect the health and biodiversity of our oceans, lakes and rivers.
