What started as a thoughtful homemade gift has evolved into a successful outdoor gaming company. BucketGolf, owned by Elevate Sports, offers a portable backyard golf experience that combines accessibility with strategic gameplay.
The concept for BucketGolf emerged from a heartfelt family connection. The game was originally created by Tyler Simmons’ sister-in-law as a gift for his brother. During a family vacation, while everyone was enjoying the homemade version, Tyler Simmons saw potential in bringing this recreational activity to a wider audience. With permission from the original creator, he began exploring manufacturing possibilities.
In 2016, BucketGolf began as a DIY set assembled from components found at six different stores. The positive response from friends and family who played the game encouraged the Simmons family to develop a professional version. Between 2017 and 2020, they transformed their informal creation into a manufactured product available for purchase.
Tyler Simmons serves as President and Founder of Elevate Sports, the parent company of BucketGolf. His background includes Division 1 college lacrosse experience, and his childhood passion for sports and backyard games influenced the company’s direction. Jenny Simmons, a University of Denver Professional Psychology graduate, directs marketing and media operations. The team also includes Chief Technology Officer Dane Holt, a University of Oregon alumnus with experience at the Pac 12 network, Havas media, and Obsqura digital, who manages supply chain logistics and financial operations.
BucketGolf implements a straightforward scoring system where each hole is played as a par 3. Players must complete each hole within three shots, with the unique twist that hitting any part of the bucket counts as completing the hole. The game features custom-molded hollow plastic balls, similar in size to baseballs, with holes like a wiffle ball. The targets are 15-inch high pop-up buckets with 15-inch wide openings.
Players can reduce their score by successfully chipping the ball into the bucket. The game includes hazard rules, requiring a one-stroke penalty and a drop when balls land in bushes, water, or plants. Each player must use a single club throughout the entire game, typically choosing from high irons (6-iron through pitching wedge).
BucketGolf offers two set options: a regular version with six holes and a pro version with nine holes, both containing identical materials. The buckets feature a design that prevents tipping in winds up to 20 mph, utilizing flag sticks that anchor into small holes at the base.
The portable nature of BucketGolf allows for versatile use beyond private backyards. Customers frequently take their sets to parks, beaches, camping sites, and vacation destinations, making it accessible to those without dedicated yard space.
