Lectic Electric Skateboard & Scooter Kits

Lectec was founded by Jared Ebersole and Luke St. Amand. Jared, now the CEO of Lectec, started his entrepreneurial journey at 15 when he created a company that sold build-it-yourself electric skateboard kits for adults. His interest in engineering was sparked when he built and sold his first electric skateboard after watching a video online. Over time, he became a self-taught electrical and mechanical engineer, designing, manufacturing, and selling skateboard components from his parents’ basement and later, their garage.

Luke, the company’s CTO, has extensive experience in product development and engineering, having worked at multiple companies, including Amazon. His passion for STEM education aligns with Lectec’s mission to make hands-on learning accessible to students. Jared and Luke met while riding electric skateboards on campus and developed a strong professional partnership. Luke initially supported Lectec in his free time but later made the decision to leave his job at Amazon and commit full-time to the company.

Lectec was founded in response to a pivotal moment during Christmas 2021. Jared gifted his nephew, Brian, an electric skateboard. Instead of simply riding it, Brian was curious about how it worked, prompting Jared to take it apart and explain the components. Jared’s sister saw an opportunity and encouraged him to create a product designed specifically for kids. That moment led to the birth of Lectec.

Jared ran his original electric skateboard company throughout high school and college before deciding to sell a majority stake in order to fully invest in Lectec. He used his savings to fund the startup. In summer 2023, Lectec officially launched, and by fall, the company had developed its first product—a DIY electric skateboard and scooter kit designed for kids.

Despite an unsuccessful crowdfunding campaign and financial losses, Jared focused on improving the product. The first beta program included 50 families in the New York City metro area, and Lectec’s headquarters was established at Mineola High School’s Synergy Campus. This setup allowed Jared to collaborate directly with students and teachers to refine the kits and develop educational materials.

In October 2023, Luke left his job at Amazon to join Lectec full-time. His decision marked a turning point, as the company began attending trade shows, expanding its curriculum, and generating its first significant revenue.

Lectec offers build-it-yourself electric skateboard and scooter kits for kids. Each kit includes all necessary parts, tools, and materials, allowing users to assemble their own rideable electric vehicle. The kits are designed to be accessible to beginners, featuring step-by-step instructions, GIFs, and videos through the Lectec Academy online platform. The estimated assembly time ranges from 1.5 to 3 hours.

Safety is a key aspect of Lectec’s design. Each battery contains a built-in fire extinguisher, and the riding modes start as low as 3 mph. Additional safety gear, such as helmets, wrist guards, and elbow pads, is available as part of an optional safety pack.

Lectec kits are designed for use in educational settings, including middle school, high school, and college. They align with STEM education principles by providing a hands-on learning experience. The kits cover fundamental engineering concepts such as motors, pulleys, batteries, and electronics. Lectec also offers an online platform with interactive content and customization options to enhance learning. The curriculum includes lesson plans, real-world challenges, and professional development support for teachers.

The assembled electric skateboard reaches a top speed of 8 mph, while the scooter can go up to 10 mph. Each battery provides a range of approximately 3 miles per charge, with additional batteries available for purchase. The kit also includes a remote, battery charger, and remote charger.

Real-time data tracking is another feature of the Lectec kits. Users can monitor power output, motor speed, battery current, motor current, motor temperature, rotation count, and energy consumption through watt-hours and amp-hours. The kit also tracks regenerative braking energy to measure how much power is returned to the battery during operation.
