Emily Strauss earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Fashion Institute of Technology, and then continued working in the art/fashion arena through her business, Vandalize Apparel, creating handmade or hand painted unique clothing. In 2009, Emily founded Design Team NYC, a collaboration of artists, designers, painters, muralists, and installation and construction experts. The company was designed to produce custom art work that ranged from interior work in a home to major fabrications and installations that cover an entire outside wall of a building.
Design Team NYC, now known as Mural Painter, Inc., also includes a trusted local network of licensed and insured vendors to get any project done–general construction, gut renovations and property flipping. They will create video, publication and audio marketing and branding material and installation events for their customers. Services provided include 3D design, installation art, sculptures, stencils and mural painting, and they work with all types of material including metal, fiberglass, acrylic, aluminum, glass and wood.
Originally based in New York City, the company now has offices in Los Angeles, Austin, and Chicago. They have created major installations and murals for such companies as Lyft, the Bronx Zoo, Warner Brothers, and Netflix.
No job is too big or too small for Mural Painters! As described on their website, the project for Netflix involved painting a 14-story mural in their stairwell. The mural began on the ground floor and evolved over the next 6 floors with abstract shapes in shades of red and gray before revealing the iconic Netflix “N” Logo. The mural then continued up the next 7 flights and is described as “reminiscent of Japanese mecha-anime meets modern 3 dimensional graffiti.”
For a boutique condominium building in Manhattan’s NoMad neighborhood, Mural Painters worked outside the twenty-fourth story to create a hand-painted stencil reflecting the nearby former factories and retailers in that neighborhood.
Individual artists can be hired at a flat daily rate for smaller jobs that don’t require a team, and can paint holiday windows, touch up existing artwork, or create small logos.
Strauss says they will work inside buildings, entry ways, rooftops, ceilings, elevators, on the side of buildings, and parking garages, “just about any space where art, image or design matters.” Which, if you think about it, is really everywhere!
