What started as a comical, improvised swimsuit for a weekend lake competition has blossomed into a thriving men’s swimwear business – Moonies Swimwear. Founded by entrepreneurs McKay and Karisa Winkel, Moonies has carved out a unique niche in the industry by offering comfortable, attention-grabbing swim undergarments designed to add a touch of “cleavage for guys.”
The Moonies journey began 18 years ago when McKay and Karisa were invited to a weekend getaway at Lake Powell. As part of the festivities, the men were required to participate in a “Stud of the Lake” Speedo competition. Determined to win, McKay set out to find an outrageous swimsuit that would wow the crowd. Unable to find anything outlandish enough, he took matters into his own hands, quite literally, by cutting a hole in the back of a Speedo. Karisa then added a clear plastic window over the “viewing window,” and just like that, Moonies was born.
As McKay strutted down the makeshift runway to the tune of “YMCA,” the audience erupted in cheers, and he was crowned the “Stud of the Lake.” This memorable moment not only earned McKay bragging rights, but also planted the seed for what would eventually become a thriving swimwear business.
Over the years, friends and family members repeatedly asked the couple to make Moonies for them, either for upcoming trips or as unique gifts. After much deliberation, McKay and Karisa finally decided to patent the innovative viewing window design and begin manufacturing the Moonies swimsuit.
McKay always felt that Moonies had the potential to be a million-dollar idea, and he finally acted on that hunch when he pitched the brand to the sharks on Shark Tank.
The response to Moonies has been overwhelmingly positive. People love the concept of “cleavage for men,” and the swimsuit has become a hit among customers seeking a fun, attention-grabbing option for the beach or pool.
McKay and Karisa Winkel, the dynamic duo behind Moonies, met in New York City where Karisa was working in advertising and McKay was employed in the finance industry. After getting married, the couple has now been together for 18 years and have four children.
Throughout their journey, the Winkels have maintained a deep appreciation for travel, exploration, and making memories. They believe that life is too short to stay within one’s comfort zone, and that’s a philosophy that is embodied in the Moonies brand.
As the Moonies story continues to unfold, McKay and Karisa remain committed to providing customers with a unique, fun, and memorable swimwear option that celebrates self-expression and a lighthearted approach to life.
