Dr. Sarath Malepati is a California-based surgeon. He became concerned about resistance to antibiotics as infections requiring surgery increased. He also observed that patients were requesting/demanding antibiotics for runny noses, coughs, sore throats and earaches, and doctors were prescribing them inappropriately. He developed the EZC Pak, a 5-day tapered immune support pack, as an alternative to antibiotics, for clinicians and patients to work together to lessen the reliance on unnecessary antibiotics, and to raise awareness of this global health crisis.
In 1928, Sir Alexander Fleming discovered penicillin, the first antibiotic, and transformed modern medicine and saved millions of lives. By 1945, Fleming warned that antibiotics would be overused and abused, and as early as the 1950s, antibiotic resistance had become a problem—one that has continued to grow into a public health concern.
Doctors tend to be cautious about prescribing antibiotics today, but then there are circumstances when antibiotics are prescribed unnecessarily. For instance, patients are insistent. They go to a doctor’s office expecting a prescription for antibiotics and, by golly, they are not leaving without it. Doctors are susceptible to “decision fatigue” when it is late in the day, or there are simply too many demands on their limited time, say, in an outpatient situation and a crowded waiting room. They have neither the energy nor the time for the lengthy explanation of why an antibiotic is not warranted or to debate the issue with a patient who just will not let up.
On those occasions, a clinician can offer the patient the EZC Pak. Patients who are aware of the dangers of antibiotic overuse can pick up an EZC Pak over the counter.
The EZC Pak is recommended for travelers. No matter how exciting the trip, the preparation is stressful. And then there’s that airplane full of coughing, sneezing passengers. You need a healthy immune system to stay well, and the EZC Pak supports your body’s natural defense mechanisms.
The EZC Pak contains 14 E capsules containing certified organic Echinacea and 14 ZC capsules containing Zinc and Vitamin C. The capsules are vegetarian, gluten free and have no added sugar.
- Echinacea is a plant that grows in the United States and Canada and has been valued for its medicinal properties for centuries. Extracts of echinacea benefit the immune system by increasing the number of white blood cells that fight infections.
- Zinc is an essential trace mineral that boosts the immune system and decreases the duration of a cold or wards it off.
- Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) is well known for its role in supporting a healthy immune system and decreasing the length of cold symptoms.
Sarath has studied, performed research and taught at such educational institutions as Georgetown University School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania, Carnegie Mellon University, Columbia University, and the University of Sydney. He is the founder and medical director of the PPC Group in Los Angeles, a health product design firm whose mission is to end antibiotic overuse around the world as a national partner of the Centers for Disease Control’s “Get Smart About Antibiotics” initiative.
