Stakt Folding Exercise Mat

The Stakt Mat is a multi-purpose fitness mat designed for extra support and comfort. Mostly, we see yoga mats that are necessarily thin so yogis can keep their balance. Stakt is twice as thick yet still light enough to transport easily. Use the mat for more intensive workouts, such as sculpt (also called resistance training or strength training); pilates (that strengthens core strength by concentrating on posture and flexibility); and high-intensity interval training that takes a cardio workout to another level or two. In fact, plank, jump, dance, lunge—enjoy the freedom that the Stakt mat gives you. And it folds so that you can add step ups, tricep dips, or incline/decline exercises to your routine, then easily store it out of sight.

Taylor Borenstein and Millie Blumka have been friends since their undergrad days at Tulane University. They were both yoga practitioners and decided to switch to more rigorous exercises. They had no problem, but their yoga mats just weren’t up to it. Their workouts included extended periods of time on their knees, wrists, hips and elbows. They tried rolling up the yoga mats for extra support, but that didn’t help. They knew there had to be a better way. Found nothing quite right on the market. They had to do it themselves, and that’s how the Stakt Mat came to be.

Stakt Mat Founders

Taylor and Millie make great business partners because they were friends first, and already respected and trusted each other. Also, with their different backgrounds, interests and education, their strengths complement each other.

Taylor Borenstein

Taylor has an A.B. from Tulane’s Freeman School of Business and a B.S. in Marketing. She also studied in Madrid, Spain, at the Universidad Pontificia Comillas, School of Business and Economics.

After acting as a student manager for Course Hero that provides a suite of online educational resources and as a marketing intern for the prestigious Abrams Artists Agency, Taylor is now Product Implementation Team Leader for Bloomberg LP, a privately held financial, software, data, and media company.

Millie Blumka

Millie has a B.S. in Psychology from Tulane and studied clinical psychology at the Danish Institute of Study Abroad in Scandinavia. She is now Director of Partnerships at Showfields, a revolutionary retail establishment that curates mission-driven products, highlighting unique, direct-to-consumer brands in wellness, home and design for discriminating and stimulating partners, artists and customers.

Taylor and Millie have marketed the mat by sponsoring classes in SoHo, Manhattan, and collaborating with fitness influencers. They had a following of thousands before they even began selling the mats. When they launched, they went viral on TikTok and completely sold out.

They had the unavoidable ups and downs that go with starting a business as well as the unusual challenge of a global pandemic. Supply chains were disrupted and it took some creative “finagling” to get items shipped from overseas on time and within budget. But they prevailed.

Stakt Gives Back

Since October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Millie and Taylor are donating a portion of sales to Northwell Health’s Feinstein Institutes (that serve New York City, Long Island and Westchester) for medical research. The funds raised will directly support a female breast cancer researcher through the organization’s Advancing Women in Science and Medicine (AWSM) awards.

Millie and Taylor have not forgotten their responsibility to the environment and created the Upcycle Program. Once you have exercised the life out of your mat, send it to them. They want very much to keep their mats out of landfills, and you get a credit toward a new mat.
