It’s a scene right out of Norman Rockwell: father and young son headed to the beach with their buckets and shovels—hand rakes, trowels, spatulas, paintbrushes and . . . a melon baller? It’s great fun, the two bonding as they build a sand castle. And then. Too many toppled towers, squashed walls, overflowing moats, broken shovels, and high tide is not going to wait much longer. Junior lost interest and is digging for sand crabs. Dad is frantically determined to build a (bleep) castle!
Kevin Lane saw a scene very similar at Laguna Beach in California. He could empathize with the man. As a lifelong sand castle builder, he understood the frustration and disappointment. As a web developer, he was used to solving technical problems creatively and finding a better way. And so he founded Create A Castle—for beginners and experts, for young and old, for sand and snow! No sand? No snow? No problem. There is also a kit for indoors.
He replaced the bucket with a Ultra Durable Split-Apart Cast with dual, easy open hinges. Pack it with sand, unbuckle the mold and, voila!, you have a brick tower. Brick ridged battlements are added for defense, and corbels provide decoration. A window cutter etches out elegant windows; a multi-purpose tool cleans up residual sand; and a mesh backpack holds all the pieces for easy carrying.

The Create A Castle Crew
- Kevin Lane
Owner and founder of Create A Castle, as well as Code Hounds, LLC, a web design and development company. Has a Fine Arts degree from Green Mountain College and a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts degree from Western Connecticut State University.
- Laurie Lane
Owner of Create A Castle and Account Manager for Code Hounds. After graduating from the University of Connecticut with a B.A. in retail management, Laurie was a District Manager for Walt Disney Company’s stores in Connecticut, New York, Vermont and Massachusetts. After raising their children, Laurie took advantage of her knowledge of all things Disney and became an authorized vacation planner for Disney’s Mouse Fan Travel.
To promote their appearance on Shark Tank on October 7, 2022, and in thanks to New Milford, CT, for the community’s ongoing support, Kevin and his friend Dan Anderson built a 15-foot sand castle on the shore of a local lake. They finished it on September 30.
